Deep versus shallow decompression stops: illustration of different decompression strategies used in technical diving
Marroni, A., Pieri, M., Imbert, J., Pelliccia, R., Arena, M., Marroni, L., Germonpré, P., Cialoni, D. and Balestra, C.

Background: Despite evolution in decompression algorithms, decompression illness is still an issue. Reducing vascular gas emboli (VGE) production by varying decompression procedures is very common among divers. Several methods have been tried, either mechanical, cardiovascular, desaturation-aimed or biochemical, with encouraging results. In this study, we tested two different decompression methods: one called DEEP, where the decompression starts deeper, the other one SHALLOW, where shallower stops were planned, for the same dive and decompression time.

Return to an extreme environment exposure after pulmonary infection: SCUBA diving as a model?
Cialoni D, Brizzolari A, Mrakic-Sposta S, Vezzoli A, Dellanoce C, Pieri M, Pelliccia R, Petrassi C, Bosco G, Barassi A, Marroni A.

The human body implements several adaptive mechanisms to perform in extreme environments. Increasingly, individuals return to such conditions after pulmonary infections, raising concerns about potential long-term respiratory consequences.

The Impact of Inotropes and Vasopressors on Cerebral Oxygenation in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Narrative Review
Salvagno M, Geraldini F, Coppalini G, Robba C, Gouvea Bogossian E, Annoni F, Vitali E, Sterchele ED, Balestra C & Taccone FS

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are critical neurological conditions that necessitate specialized care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Managing cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) is of primary importance in these patients. To maintain targeted MAP and CPP, vasopressors and/or inotropes are commonly used. However, their effects on cerebral oxygenation are not fully understood.

Exploring the effects of post operative hyperoxic intermittent stimuli on reticulocyte levels in cancer patients: a randomized controlled study
Khalife M, Salvagno M, Sosnowski M & Balestra C.

Background: Anemia is common among hospitalized critically ill and surgical oncological patients. The rising incidence of cancer and aggressive treatments has increased the demand for blood products, further strained by a dwindling donor pool. The normobaric oxygen paradox (NOP) has emerged as a potential avenue to increase EPO levels. While some studies support its efficacy, research remains limited in clinical settings.
